Hi Ant, Micah, Dave, Case et al ... My favourite of those koan-like quotes is "Some things have to be believed to be seen." or my own variant "In order to stand on the shoulders of giants, you have to believe in giants."
Anyway Ant, when you said this (to Platt) "Really? It's no wonder that you take relatively unenlightened people [] such as Rush Limbaugh seriously if you're just accepting statements about reality on face value. .... the Buddha sought general enlightenment. I'd therefore be interested in knowing what you think a self-appointed public commentator such as Rush Limbaugh wants for the wider world?" I think the point that makes is that enlightenment is not about the quality of your arguments per se, but is about what you value ie "what you want for the world". Talking about finding things in the last place you looked ... you've probably all heard this one ? A police officer comes across a drunk scrabbling on the ground beside a lampost in a parking lot, and asks him what he's doing. "Looking for my key" says the drunk. The officer gets down on his knees to help, "Where were you when you dropped it ?" he asks. "Somewhere over there."; "So why are we searching here ?"; "Because there's more light over here under the street lamp."
