Ant, That's a tough, I give up. On the net the quote is most often ascribed to William James but also to Henry James, Knute Rockne and Edward R. Murrow. I could not find it in digital copies of five or six volumes of James' work.
I did find this in Vol. 1 of his Principles of Psychology 1890: "Who can swear that his prejudices and irrational beliefs constitute a less bulky part of his mental furniture than his clarified opinions?" Not sure if that makes it Young James, Old James or Midlife Crisis James. Krimel -------------------------------- Ant McWatt said: As William James once (supposedly) said: "A great many people think they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices." DMB said June 12th: Ha! I have that quoted taped to the wall next to my computer. Ant McWatt comments: Good for you Dave. I think that's one of James' best quips but I would be interested if anyone knows the original hardcopy source for it. Best wishes, as ever, Anthony Some other words of DMB wisdom: >I saw some the other day in cyber space. As far as I recall, they went >something like this... > >"They could do it because they didn't know it was impossible." > >"You can't trust your eyes when your imagination is out of focus." > >"the difference between fact and fiction is that it is required that >fiction has to be plausible." > >"Suppose you were a criminal. Now suppose you were in Congress. But I >repeat myself." moq_discuss mailing list Listinfo, Unsubscribing etc. http://lists.moqtalk.org/listinfo.cgi/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org Archives: http://lists.moqtalk.org/pipermail/moq_discuss-moqtalk.org/ http://moq.org.uk/pipermail/moq_discuss_archive/
