Ian,

I think these statements capture most folks and are similar to yours;

I'll believe it, when I see it.

I'll see it, when I believe it.

A word on Limbaugh here.

Limbaugh is of high quality. The problem is the confusion over what he does.
He is not a politico, or a philosopher; he is a radio personality. He sells
air time, nothing more. His shtick happens to be a right wing personality,
one step back from Steven Colbert. The difference is; Colbert is letting you
in on the joke. The people that are angered or agree with him are being
duped, it's an act. He's a radio personality - an actor. And he's a very
good actor, as his supporters and detractors will attest. Feminazi...come on
that is clearly shtick. EIB...shtick. He's the Borat of radio.

Hi Ant, Micah, Dave, Case et al ...

My favourite of those koan-like quotes is
"Some things have to be believed to be seen."
or my own variant
"In order to stand on the shoulders of giants, you have to believe in
giants."

Anyway Ant, when you said this (to Platt)
"Really? It's no wonder that you take relatively unenlightened people
[] such as Rush Limbaugh seriously if you're just accepting statements
about reality on face value. .... the Buddha sought general
enlightenment. I'd therefore be interested in knowing what you think
a self-appointed public commentator such as Rush Limbaugh wants for
the wider world?"

I think the point that makes is that enlightenment is not about the
quality of your arguments per se, but is about what you value ie "what
you want for the world".
