Pinch cards are usually homemade...take an index card and write "yes" at  the 
top and "no" at the bottom...or write a smiley and frowny  face.   Any two 
(or more) choices that apply to the lesson you are  doing. Pass one out to each 
child and show them how to hold them up with their  finger pointing to the one 
that applies! It is a great way to see how everyone  is doing with the 
lesson... 
Yes, our first graders are writing well enough to read. They had a full day  
K program for the first time last year with an emphasis on writing and  
comprehension strategy development during read alouds. By the end of the year,  
almost 70% of our k kids were reading at least at preprimer.
