We do not and I think it sad that it happens to children this young.  I want to 
produce readers and I believe that phonics is part of the process, but the 
business of long vowel/short vowel seems nonsensical to me.  There are 
something like 39 a sounds--how the heck can you teach that?  Analogies, yes; 
spelling patterns, yes; some of the more consistent rules, yes; the helpful 
sometimes rules, yes..  And I don't care if a kid can identify a digraph or a 
blend as long as they can read the words (and apply it in spelling).
