I have to ask you if you have monies and teachers available for special education students or struggling readers? If you do, then why shouldn't you have opportunities for students who excel in reading?
How would you provide opportunities for these students to read books above their grade level in a regular classroom? Would you have opportunities for these students to have indepth discussion on the books they're reading? Would they bore the rest of the class? All too often, these students are left to fend for themselves and are bored when teachers teach to the middle and the low level students are given extra support. In some instances, the above average students become the trouble students because they're bored and in some cases, drop out of school. If you are teaching this class, then you are required to challenge these students so they have the same opportunities that every other student has. They too, are our future and in many cases, will be the leaders of our future. Their future, and ours, is in your hands. In reading I believe the scores are well above 90%. This is my first year teaching 7th grade and the first year of a newly developed "advanced" literature class which I am teaching. I'm struggling with how to make the class "advanced". And now we are supposed to present to the board.Theoretically, I don't like the concept of the class. I don't think my philosphy of teaching meshes well with leveled reading classes. I wanted to hear others opinions. Does your middle school have advanced classes? _______________________________________________ Mosaic mailing list [email protected] To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org.
