Years ago a friend was in medical school and taking some class. I remember her
being absolutely appalled at the discussions that revolved around things like
how many ultrasounds would you need to order to pay for a piece of
machinery--how many unneeded or unwarranted procedures would it take to afford
a machine that could very well make a life or death difference to a few
patients. I think that we are facing similar ethical dilemmas now that
intervention is becoming a healthy business for some. The programs are
expensive, but do reach some students. I am always fearful that then the
widespread use is seen as justification for the purchase, and I guess I
understand how we got to this point. It is just sad.
