SFA at the middle school level is nothing but novels and nonfiction stories. It is all literature-based. I don't let the scripted-ness freak me out. I pick and choose the portions of the lesson/unit that work for the needs of my students. I do NOT follow the script. If the model book for a certain grade level is something that won't interest my students, I find another book or short story and use that. When students aren't being successful, I rely on the Stephanie Harvey toolkit reading/thinking strategies as well as other strategies. Again, there is no one program that fits all, but SFA at the middle school level is better than most, because it provides quality literature and a lesson plan/outline of a variety of skills and strategies that readers need to master to be proficient readers/thinkers.

The absolute worst part that I found with SFA is that because it's supposed to be successful for all, there's nothing in place for those that aren't successful. That being said, my personal opinion is that it is very scripted and holds no appeal for students. If students aren't reading or at least exposed to literature in some manner or another, trade books or even in an anthology I don't see where any motivation to learn to read will occur.

Hope that this helps!

My district is giving thought to using Success for All. I know very little about the program, except that J. Kozel thinks it's really awful for kids. Does anyone on here know about it, and have any advice on how I can begin to wrap my head around this?

Thanks!
