Your flexibility is totally dependent on your administration. When my previous
decided to adopt a basal, teachers were promised they would be able to continue
reading workshop and lit circles. However, once the basal was adopted, they
were told they could not use any other programs which included Harvey's toolkit
and the Lucy Caulkins Writing Workshop materials. It was awful! There was no
time for any teacher flexibility.

SFA at the middle school level is nothing but novels and nonfiction stories.
It is all literature-based. I don't let the scripted-ness freak me out. I
pick and choose the portions of the lesson/unit that work for the needs of
my students. I do NOT follow the script. If the model book for a certain
grade level is something that won't interest my students, I find another
book or short story and use that. When students aren't being successful, I
rely on the Stephanie Harvey toolkit reading/thinking strategies as well as
other strategies. Again, there is no one program that fits all, but SFA at
the middle school level is better than most, because it provides quality
literature and a lesson plan/outline of a variety of skills and strategies
that readers need to master to be proficient readers/thinkers.
