I agree Comp Connection by McGregor is a great book for all grade levels
especially for ideas to launch each strategy and whole idea of
metacognition. My experience has been with this book alone - good strategy
instruction does not happen. It becomes a fun activity but then the
teaching stops. The study of Harvey's Strategy That Works and the lesson in
the toolkit are needed to build a solid foundation of what strategy
instruction looks like. I agree with the post in having teachers work to
develop grade level specific lessons with each strategy would be very
productive staff development.

big shifts in reading. Most likely we will move to Daily 5/CAFE in k-2 and
then Reading Workshop 3-6. Reading strategies will be taught throughout,
beginning in 1st grade.

some faculty members who have attended D5/CAFE workshops, some who have
attended Teachers College RWP, and some who have little or no knowledge of
either. Regardless, we need something systematic, that will get us all on
the same page, in both philosophy and practice.
