Thanks for all of your helpful information. We are a private school, so we have the benefit of having a small group of teachers and no district mandates. I like your suggestions and think they will work. We are having a retreat tomorrow where we are already have scheduled to vertically look at our benchmarks and find programs that align to them. (I am confident that D5 and Workshop with strategies will align nicely and we will go that direction.) I also like the "menu" idea. Certainly thinking that a varied summer institute in-house will be the way to go. Part book club discussion, part lesson planning, part teacher choice.

Then do whole spectrum from grade K to 6 and make sure they align with state or national standards. For professional development, I'd recommend two things. First, our teachers always wanted lessons specific to their grade level. They didn't like using Strategies that Work or Debbie Millers book because it covered multiple grades. So, once you have the benchmarks, I'd have teachers work on creating lessons that can be shared across the district (if you have multiple buildings) for each grade level. At least a starting point. I used texts that were already being used by many of the teachers. Second, teachers always wanted a "menu" of choices for staff development. The only problem was that some teachers thought they were doing a specific thing, like guided reading. However, they were really doing literature circles.
