HI, I know this isn't really professional development, but I'd suggest that each grade identify specific benchmarks that you expect students to meet. Then do whole spectrum from grade K to 6 and make sure they align with state or national standards. For professional development, I'd recommend two things. First, our teachers always wanted lessons specific to their grade level. They didn't like using Strategies that Work or Debbie Millers book because it covered multiple grades. So, once you have the benchmarks, I'd have teachers work on creating lessons that can be shared across the district (if you have multiple buildings) for each grade level. At least a starting point. I used texts that were already being used by many of the teachers. Second, teachers always wanted a "menu" of choices for staff development. The only problem was that some teachers thought they were doing a specific thing, like guided reading. However, they were really doing literature circles. If you have principals who can work with teachers and you have very specific guidelines for each literacy component, this is less of a problem. Good luck. Carol
>Hi all. I'm leading my school's language arts committee and we are making big >shifts in reading. Most likely we will move to Daily 5/CAFE in k-2 and then >Reading Workshop 3-6. Reading strategies will be taught throughout, beginning >in 1st grade. > >What do you guys suggest in terms of professional development? _______________________________________________ Mosaic mailing list [email protected] To unsubscribe or modify your membership please go to http://literacyworkshop.org/mailman/options/mosaic_literacyworkshop.org.
