Does this go back to the whole language controversy? Parents and administrators don't seem to understand what they don't have experience with. The BL approach does require staff development and grade level benchmarks, but doesn't research support this? It certainly differentiates more effectively than a basal. And promotes REAL reading. I loved reading Ellin Keene's Deeper Comprehension because it took the reading strategies to a newer level and meaning for me. Regie Routman so believes in high expectations; it would be so helpful for the "balanced literacy is so touchy-feely-wishy-washy" people to read her. Some anti-BL folk simply don't understand how much teaching goes on, instead believing it to be kind of laissez faire.
