I would suggest reading Building Background Knowledge for Academic Achievement 
by Robert J. Marzano.  It is actually about teaching vocabulary.  He describes 
six steps for vocabulary instruction.  His steps are based on research on What 
Works in Schools.  It was eye opening for me.  Students can only learn a small 
number of words at a time.  He describes the different tiers of words and which 
ones that should be taught. You can google this book and get some information 
from what you find on line.

I am using Tim Rasinski' et. al' Building Vocabulary from Word Roots.  It's
excellent.  It's a systematic approach to teaching vocabulary using Greek and
Latin prefixes, bases and suffixes.  I have seen my students figure out unknown
words by connecting these word parts from known words.  Here's a link with more

Checked out this link and 'Wow' this program looks quite extensive.  Have 
followed Tim Rasinski and use many of his books for fluency and this vocabulary 
looks like what I am been seeking as a resource for my students.  Love the fact 
that it covers all ages so a district could adopt the program and have all 
their bases covered.  How long does a typical lesson take?
