You're being told wrong. Netscape 6.x is a branched off version of
Mozilla that is being developed "in-house" as opposed to Mozilla that is
being developed by many of the same engineers as well as
programmers/contributors outside of Netscape and is "open-source"
whereas 6.x isn't. The two apps share the same MOZREGISTRY.DAT file if
both are installed.
