When someone finds me a GUI client that does even half the things slrn
does, I'll be amazed, but probably still won't use it. (because I wouldn't
be able to detach it in screen[1] and take it to work.)

Things like being able to gradually reduce the priority of messages based
on how many newsgroups they're cross-posted to, or whether they've got
all-caps subject lines become invaluable very quickly. And being able to
automagically highlight anything that's a follow-up to your own post is
nice for busy groups. (or when you just need an ego-boost)
