The reason I want it is because my IMAP connection is painfully slow so I prefer
to synchronize occasionally rather than have the thing go off to the server for
each unread message I click on. While I'm off-line reading my mail I will often
want to go off and look at something on the web and it is a nuisance to have to
remember to have to switch online/offline every time I do this.

My IMAP server is also inside an intranet. When I'm not connected to the intranet
(via a VPN) I want to be able to take the IMAP account off-line so that it doesn't
check for mail every few minutes but still carry on using the rest of NS 6 online.

This could be accomplished without complicating things for the average user. Have
a big online/offline switch just like in 4.x but allow someone like myself to
specifically toggle the online/offline status of an account, for example from a
context menu. If per-account toggling is not possible for technical reasons then
being able to toggle the mail, news, browser portions separately would be almost
as desirable.
