Yes, this is a feature. See jwz' ranting <http://www.jwz.org> for 
rationale. In this case, I agree with him.

If I search for threads, which I opened, I can do that now easily in the 
3pane. In 4.x, the sort order was locked to Date, when Threading was 
enabled.
