Zack, thanks for the reply.  I have checked only one application is 
running. I can't find how to deselect the option which makes M9.7 the 
default mail client; where do I go?

I have not had trouble before with both programs using the same *.dat 
file. When I reinstalled both programs when all this started, I allowed 
them to create a new *.dat file. I don't remmember which was done first. 
I'll retry ASAP.
