Thanks for the reply.

Just tried deleting inbox.msf.  As I suspected, it didn't work.  The 
inbox file (containing messages) shows 0 kilobytes from explorer so 
unless the system actually restores this file, it will remain empty.

Are there other temp files created (perhaps in a windows temp directory) 
during the compacting process that may have a copy of my messages?

Can't believe the timing of this.  Just last night I said to myself I 
should backup my mail.  And today, voila.  No backup necessary.
