I'm not sure what you mean by recreating the profile, but the profile
itself was originally created with the Profile manager. I also used the
mail account settings to create the mail accounts. The only manual
changes I made to the profile was to add my existing mail account files
(e.g. under 'Mail') so that my older messages and folders are
accessible. I'm assuming that the mail files themselves, i.e. inbox or
sent, can be moved from profile to profile without problems. This has
worked for me in the past, e.g. moving from Netscape 4.7 to 6.2. I did
not copy any of the *.msf files over since these are reproduced
automatically by the system. In summary, I'm not sure that there was
anything wrong with my profile.

I've noticed that a few other folks have had similar fates with their
inboxes, where a compact job would go unfinished, leaving an empty inbox
and a sometimes empty, sometimes not nstmp directory behind. If this is
indeed a problem, has this problem been identified as a bug?

Having recently lost hundreds of messages to this problem, I hope that a
fix or workaround is at least being considered. In the meantime, I
suggest that users disable automatic compacting until more is known
about this problem. At least for users of mozilla mail 0.9.4 included
with Netscape 6.2.1.

Here are some more details for those interested:
Platform: AMD Athlon XP 1700 w/512 MB memory
OS: Windows 2000 SP2
Mail: Netscape 6.2.1/Mozilla 0.9.4.1
Affected accounts: 2 out of 6 mail accounts
Symtom: empty(deleted) inbox and empty nstmp directory after folder
compacting
Mail type: all POP3 accounts
