Hello,
[MP3 ENCODER] Marks new VBR now the default
I know I'm not a developer myself, but I'll try to make some points.
If I understand correctly, there was beta up to 3.83, and then both
Mark Taylor and Takehiro Tominaga put forward a new VBR algo
(respectively -Y and -Z).
I tested -Z, was very happy with it, and it became default for some
builds.
The reason I liked the "-Z" is because it felt like the natural
continuation of the 3.70->3.80 line. Only recently enhancements were
made to the 3.83, in order to get rid of some nasty artifacts in <=3.82.
Downside was that the size somewhat jumped on hard-to-encode pieces,
so that a file came out 15-20% bigger than it's 3.7 and 3.80
counterparts. "-Z" fixed this size-increasement by being more
thorough-searching on what easier parts, the avg size lowered, while
the hard parts were still high bitrated.
I was somewhat expecting this to become the new 3.84beta. All worked
(for me) in the 3.84a with -Z defaulted.
It didn't happen, and now we're still at 384a1 but with -Y defaulted.
Why was the "-Y" setting chosen above the (then current) Takehiro default?
Some downsides:
# it's buggy: the "-b128" seems to have _no_ influence: I get 48/64/112
frames? (see all numbers below)
# the size is totally off-scale (see all numbers below)

3.80 Average bitrate: 147,1
3.83 Average bitrate: 171,0
384a1 Average bitrate: 165,2
384a1-Z Average bitrate: 149,8
384a1-Y (now standard) Average bitrate: !188,6!
please check the bitrate distribution on this on (below): Find the odd
one out :)
Techno-Dance: _Hardest_ encoding (Length: 05:26.53 Total frames: 12500)

83 Average bitrate: 238,7
84Z - takehiro Average bitrate: 228,9
384a1-Y (now standard) Average bitrate: !252,9!
I mean: this new 3.84a1-Y is such a quantum leap from the older
builds, and my ears just don't understand why.
I (and many with me), were very content with the (no bugs found)
384a1-Z with the Takehiro default. It had the bugfixes of 3.83, but
with very acceptable size. Now, it's like this version never existed,
and I am forced to use, and advise users to use, the 3.83 version.
I'm politely asking to make the now "--old-vbr" default for 1 more
build, call it 3.84beta (I don't know of bugs in this version) and
then maybe continue development on the current Mark vbr as 3.85alpha?
The Mark vbr needs much work imho, and for now the only available beta
giving results (poorer Q though) like 3.84a-Z is the 3.80 build :(.
thank you for the time and bearing with me through the lengthy text...
