Code bloat. LAME is a mp3 encoder, not a sound editor or effect generator.
Use the proper tools for that , like sox ( if it actually supports balance
adjustment; if not write a feature request to the author : sox.sourceforge.net ! )

sox input.fil - balance x y , other_effect u z | lame -

( read the docs for correct options )
