Megan et al:
The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board enters into various types of
partnerships with all sorts of organizations if we feel that this
partnership will help us carry out our various missions to provide Park,
Environmental and Recreation services to the people of Minneapolis. The
MPRB has agreed to work with the UofM, and allow them to build a facility,
on Park Board land that will service their women's crew (read rowing)
program. The MPRB was willing to do this because it fits into our mission
of recreation, where as if the UofM were asking to build classrooms or
housing on Park Board land it would not even be considered. Although I do
not recall all of the details, I believe that this facility will provide
public toilets in the park and some access and exposure to the sport of crew
for high school age people. Park Board planners are working with the UofM M
to make sure the design will be blend in to the landscape and not be an
eyesore. The UofM is also expanding its programs of providing mentors and
student assistants for Park Board Programs in our parks. This facility
will be build on the East Bank where the riverboat theater uses to be
docked, just below the U Hospital.
As far as the facility under the Lake Street Bridge that burned a few years
ago: That is a facility of the Mpls Rowing Club that has had a facility
there for several decades. Again, the Park Board agreed to allow a private
group to build on Park Board land because it is consistent with our mission
to provide recreation to the people of Minneapolis. When that facility
burned a few years ago, there arose two proposals within the Rowing Club.
One group wanted to rebuild, with a different design, a small facility about
the same size as what burned. The other faction proposed a much bigger
facility that would have much more room that would allow city high schools
or others to share the space and perhaps include other amenities as well.
While I personally favored the larger facility that would have opened up the
sport to high school kids in the city, the Rowing Club after much debate and
internal struggle, finally decided to go with the smaller version, which is
being built now.

Subject: [Mpls] Park Board Questions
Recently I found out about a proposal from Rec Sports at the University to
build a boathouse right on the sight where the river flats are now, just
below the East Bank of campus. Question for the park Board candidates and
other interested entities:
Are they aware of the U's plans to build a "boathouse" on the River Flats.
Are they aware of exactly the location, and won't that interfere with the
beauty, usage, whatever of the area?
What type of public access would be required?
Finally, what would happen if at some point the U and the Park Board had a
disagreement and decided the boathouse wasn't working out?
