I'd like to move from convention arrangements to issues that some
Minneapolitans have to live with every day.
There's an interesting letter in this weeks' Southwest Journal, from
ex-council member Denny Shulstad.
http://swjournal.com/swjournal/myarticles.asp?P=382024&S=212&PubID=6817&EC=0
(first letter)
Shulstad asserts that Council Member and mayoral candidate Lisa McDonald was
the tie-breaking vote to build the north/south runway, rather than insist on
Dakota County land-banking for a new airport. Now, McDonald has run ads
saying she supports landbanking. Shulstad writes, "I pleaded with her to
support land banking and oppose the new runway, and emphasized that it would
be the most important vote she will ever take for South Minneapolis, all to
no avail." He asserts that for her to now advocate land banking is
"misleading" and "outrageous."
Tough charges - and I'd like to get Council Member McDonald's response on
the list.
Is Shulstad right about the vote? And more importantly - did the vote have
any real effect on whether land-banking happened? I thought the legislature
decided against land-banking...didn't that mean the city had to suck up the
consequences? Could McDonald's vote have been a little like the one to
settle the Kondirator settlement - that the city's position was doomed, and
the council had to swallow consequences it didn't like but had to make the
best of?
