I too have been deleting many many posts lately. Here's my attempt to
start a new thread . . .
This subject has been running through my brain for a few months. Last
year there was a thread about bird sightings. We have bird feeders and
enjoy watching the various birds come to our backyard. SO, with all of
the knowledgeable folks on this list, I thought I'd start this thread-
We live in NE Mpls- actually a few miles from the Roseville border. We
also have a lot of industrial areas along with two large cemeteries
(Sunset and Hillside) and a large Mpls golf course- Gross. This past
summer I have spotted large hawk like birds. In fact this bird or birds
don't seem to be intimidated by city life. I have spotted this bird of
pray perched low about 50 feet from a road, sitting on the driveway at
the entrance to Sunset Cemetery AND in my backyard! I have even stopped
my car on these deserted roads because I couldn't believe what I was
seeing. The bird never flinched! One morning as I was sitting in my
kitchen, a large bird swooped in front of the window and over the house.
It was obviously a bird of pray. It was a reddish brown color with a
white spotted underbelly. All of the "regular" backyard birds were
going nuts.
Is anyone else in the city seeing birds of pray? I know there are
falcons living on the downtown skyscrapers. Occasionally I see one
perched on a highway street light over the Mississippi River- 35W
bridge crossing. We've lived in NE for nearly 14 years and I never
remember seeing such wild birds. Or maybe the birds I see were UM
Raptor Center releases who liked the area?
I'm thrilled to see the eagles come back. If you haven't been to
Wabasha to see them- it's a thrill. (David- sorry for the non-Mpls reference).
Is this a good sign that we're seeing these birds in the city? I
understand the impact banning DDT has had on the come back of many of
these birds. Or is it bad because they are adapting to such urban settings?
