That's great that they feel empowered, but are they learning?   Too many
times have I been in school classrooms and seen teachers having to divert
extra attention to those children that don't understand English.  Teachers
often give these children easier assignments outside the core lesson plans,
and the other children are having to translate languages for them.  The
insane policies of "learning on the run" must stop.  Teach the parents and
children at least a functioning level of English before sending the kids off
to battle Algebra.   I already know that you'll argue this point with me,
and rebut me with "it's the best way to learn English" or "kids come to us
at different levels, therefore emersion is the best way".  Bull cookies!
Functional English understanding must be achieved before attending
mainstream classrooms, and the parents need to learn and speak English at
home.  Give these kids a fair chance to be successful!
