Ms. Shreves writes " our foreign born students who have been empowered under our governmental systems (and through student government), to advocate for their beliefs (and of course :-)) programs. "
Sumner - That's great that they feel empowered, but are they learning? Too many times have I been in school classrooms and seen teachers having to divert extra attention to those children that don't understand English. Teachers often give these children easier assignments outside the core lesson plans, and the other children are having to translate languages for them. The insane policies of "learning on the run" must stop. Teach the parents and children at least a functioning level of English before sending the kids off to battle Algebra. I already know that you'll argue this point with me, and rebut me with "it's the best way to learn English" or "kids come to us at different levels, therefore emersion is the best way". Bull cookies! Functional English understanding must be achieved before attending mainstream classrooms, and the parents need to learn and speak English at home. Give these kids a fair chance to be successful!
