Bob Says:
(snip) the law is continually changing thanks to career politicians of whom
I am guessing that 80 percent are LAWYERS! It is job security for them!
Basic tenets of education (reading, writing, math) haven't changed nearly as
much as laws have. (snip)

Don adds:

I hate to correct Bob Velez because I like many of his posts, but please
don't "guess" that 80 percent are lawyers. In the Minnesota Senate, where I
work, only 22 percent are lawyers. And I know from personal experience that
because of their legislative obligations, some of them don't have time to
practice, so the "job security" issue Bob raised just doesn't come in to
play.

I believe that the legislators I know try to pass education laws to improve
education, not for some sinister reason... certainly we can debate the
merits of the results, but I'd like to encourage us not to question motives
so much.

Local angle: as you know Jesse has proposed a $100 million cut to K-12
statewide, which would have a drastic impact on the Mpls public schools. In
the Senate, it's my understanding that K-12 cuts will be drastically smaller
than that. I don't know the House plan yet, but I have heard that the cuts
would disproportionately affect Mpls... this last piece may have been
covered in another posting, so my apologies if I missed it.
