Tom Johnson, consultant on the I-35W Access Project
wrote:

Mn/DOT right-of-way width for I-35W at Lake Street is
287.5 feet.
Comparing that with Lake Street, between Stevens and
Nicollet Avenues, the worst case scenario for Lake
Street (snip) would be 133 feet.

David Piehl asks:

Comparing MNDOT's right-of-way to the actual size of
Lake street seems intentionally misleading.

To properly compare the Lake Street widening proposed
to the existing width of the freeway, we need to talk
about the actual width, vs right-of-way. At 32nd
Street, all eight lanes of I35W plus shoulders for
both directions are 138 feet - only slightly less than
the 133 feet referred to as worst case for Lake
Street.

To refer to the 287.5 feet of MNDOT right-of-way fails
to acknowlege the fact that this space includes most
of Stevens and Second Avenues. What could motivate a
paid consultant to compare a right-of-way instead of
actual width?

Also - thank you to all the people who have commented
on the letter sent to this list by Peter McLaughlin -
that it appears by both content and style to have been
penned by Tom Johnson; I agree, and noticed that
myself - however, since Peter sent it, he owns it
regardless of who wrote it.
