Unfortunately, in your attempt to compare apples and apples, you still kept oranges in the mix (the 133' for Lake Street IS synonymous with right-of-way for 35W, because 133' includes sidewalks and medians). Are you intentionally misleading? You also are comparing what Lake Street needs in the year 2002 with how 35W was built in the 1960s. Did you know that Lake Street traffic volume has not changed since 1976? Does that sound like it is at capacity? Let's try to get to apples to apples: 35W existing right-of-way: 287.5 feet Lake St proposed (bldg to bldg) max width: 131 feet (2 sidewalks @ 14', 1 landscaped median @ 18', 7 traffic lanes including turn-lanes @ 85') 35W traffic width (1960): 138 feet Lake St traffic width (1960): 52 feet 35W traffic width (proposed, no HOV): 138 feet Lake St traffic width (proposed): 85 feet 35W speed limit: 55 Lake St speed limit: 30 35W: no stop lights, off-ramps Lake St: stop lights, turn lanes Lake Street will only be at the max 131' for four blocks, one of which is under the freeway. Lake Street is widened for only six blocks, again, one of which is under the freeway. The remainder of Lake from the River to the Lake, remains as it is today. Look at any local street-freeway interchange and you will see that there are more traffic lanes for the first few blocks. Let's turn your question around: What could motivate a resident, organizing a group to circumvent the existing process, to compare actual width of 35W roadway to the Lake Street width including sidewalks and medians? Or try to discredit the business-community partnership that is trying to make 35W an accessible, friendly freeway? To compare a freeway and the Main Street of Minneapolis seems intentionally misleading and inciteful.
