I totally agree with the comments regarding personal
safety and general livability of the areas around Lake
Street if and when it is doubled in size as planned.

Think of it - if such widening were proposed in areas
that are intentially pedestrian-friendly, such as
Uptown, people would rebel. The neighborhood goal (as
I understand it) for the re-opened Nicollet / Lake
intersection is to have commercial mixed with high
density residential units. If there are residential
units, shouldn't the area also be pedestrian friendly?
The widening proposal jeopardizes the future of the
area in more ways than one!

Further, I believe that the I-35W PAC heard from a
professional in traffic planning - Mr. Fred Dock, who
believes the city/state traffic estimates for the area
are overstated - by DOUBLE! The upshot - the area
will be destroyed to accomodate traffic that doesn't
exist. Sounds like solid, Minneapolis planning went
into that proposal - just like the KMart proposal 20+
years ago that nearly choked Nicollet to death!

Other than Peter McLaughlin, the other politicians who
were part of the access proposal are all gone from
office. Maybe it's time to seriously consider what
area residents are interested in, vs. following the
out-dated suburban model (suburbs are moving away from
it) of big roads and strip malls.
