While I mostly disagree with Mr. Jacobsen, he does raise a very important point. If Clinton were in charge of this war instead of Bush, how many of us would've shown up at the demonstration yesterday? And how many of us at the demonstration yesterday protested sanctions against Iraq under the Clinton administration, even after Madeline Albright, his Secretary of State, said on national TV that the deaths of thousands of Iraqi children was worth pursuing our nation's goal of undermining Iraq's current regime? It's hypocritical to identify Bush as the problem, scoundrel that he is, while we refuse to acknowledge the part that Democrats have played in our nation's collective terrorism. NOW TO BRING ALL THIS BACK LOCALLY: After considerable misgivings I decided to attend yesterday's demonstration myself to show my solidarity with millions of others across the globe. But I felt a little guilty about holding up the busses and wondered how many people on Franklin Avenue (most of them poor) waited in the cold for one or two hours not knowing what happened to the #2 bus (and please keep in mind, busses run a lot less frequently on weekends). If only fifty anti-war activists out of yesterday's crowd would've shown up at City Hall last time one of our council members attempted to bring up an anti-war resolution for discussion, a stronger impact might've been made without inconveniencing people who are already struggling enough as it is. Too bad city council meetings aren't as sexy as demonstrations.
