That is frightening, chilling, horrible. What I understood when this phenomena was not noted by the major media outlets--newspapers, TV, radio, and Internet giants--was that we were being asked to believe a myth. I concluded that the President and the Defense Department wanted to make a war in the Middle East, for whatever reasons, personal, corporate, or national, mortal or venial.
My first reaction was, "How stupid can we get?" (This was on 9/13, first day stunned, second day sick, third day brains kick in.)
What was said at the United Nations hearings on 2/14/2003 by our co-nations, "friends," partners-in-alliances and enemies was that going to war with Iraq has no backer but Great Britain/UK What I heard was that we, the US of A, are too warlike and we are threatening the safety of the planet.
Unlike Vietnam, WWII, WWI, Korea, eastern Europe, etc. only two years into the war dance, and a very substantial number of people around the world were willing to march in the depth of winter for Northern peoples. Hans Blixt, the guy who is examining Rag for WMD, says he has found nothing which warrants the US claims of emergency. What I heard was that if there are WMDs in Iraq, they are of the chemical and biological type. We also know that in dealing with Iraq we are dealing with a mad man. Now we have a madman, the possibility of bio/chem weapons, and UN members saying, loud and long, "War is not a good idea in this situation."
I haven't fell this scared since the Cuban Missile Crisis, and at that point in my life I didn't even know enough to understand how scared I really should have been.
Everyone on this list has the right to be scared witless by this situation. None on this list or off it, can afford to act through the veils of their fears at this juncture.
Getting into a contest about who is more responsible is witless as well. From the viewpoint of the rest of the world, we are one nation. I hear them saying we're a big bully and that what we, this one nation, want to do is stupid and short-sighted. It took a lot of years during the Vietnam Era to get that across to enough people to insist that the democrats, republicans and others hear it loud and clear. Lyndon Johnson could hear it, but stepped down because he couldn't deal with the dilemma he was in. Unfortunately, the war had gone on for 10 years at the point where elected leaders were hearing. Fortunately, there were fewer bio/chem weapons in play or in storage during that era.
If we deal with Iraq this way the US wants to, we will eat, drink, and breathe toxic poisons in great quantities for a very long time. We are not prepared to contend with that reality, nor is the rest of the world.
The only weapon we the people have, as opposed to the nation as an entity, is to make it very clear to all and sundry that we protest. I was very sorry that my health did not allow me to be with the visible protesters around the world.
