Since Paul has brought up this 1/4 % sales tax for the stadium, (which I am sure the City politicians support), I have a question and a suggestion. How can the politicians even think of a stadium when they thinking of cutting Police protection for impacted neighborhoods? Oh that's right, they will use what's left of the police to protect those games, and the "Good People" going to them, but possibly have no interest in poor minority neighborhoods! My suggestion is to relieve their conscience by adding a 3/8% tax instead of 1/4% and use the extra amount to guarantee adequate police protection for ALL Minneapolis neighborhoods. They sure seem to be able to get creative about funding sports, but not when solving social issues. Or perhaps proper policing is so unimportant that they don't even bother thinking about it? Which one do you think? The Council seems to be saying, "Forget about their children who may be shot and die, forget about their wives and daughters being raped, and forget their families being threatened by drug dealers. Those poor people will not even notice while they are watching sports." Well, I guess a lot of us are noticing where elected politicians priorities are. So my advice to them is, "Act like you really care and be a little creative." We will remember it at election time. Oh that's right, most of politicians count on the people from "good" neighborhoods not caring either, and they are the ones who vote. People from poor and minority neighborhoods need to start voting more so politicians start thinking we count to.
