I haven't heard any justification for bicycle registration. I would appreciate it if the
gentleman that started the thread could elaborate on why his region has bicycle registration or
why it is under consideration.
As I understand it, some of the motive to register bicycles was not just to generate some fees, but also to assist in recover of bicycles after theft. If your bike was stolen or confiscated, when you went down the police holding area you couldn't get it back unless you showed your registration. I registered one of the five or six bikes I've used in the last ten years. It wasn't too difficult, as it was a new bike and I worked at Freewheel at the time. However, the registration was good for three years, I garnered no benefit from it as I religiously lock my bike, and I didn't re-register. If the fees generated were dedicated to provision of more designated bike lanes, trails, and bike racks, then I would favor it. But that doesn't seem to be the intent of the registration.
