Mr. Held's and the board's logic for paying Mr. Jennings a bonus equal to an
average annual teacher salary so that he is not distracted from the troublesome fuss
of lining up a new job after he leaves the current one could be fairly applied to the
employment of the many teachers who were laid off this year, and the last. Most
teachers would justifiably presume that the difference in the
pay they receive vs. the base pay that Mr. Jennings receives more than makes up for
the potential uncertainty of his employment.
The board is also expecting (without apparent concern that they might be looking
for other jobs) current teachers to perform their duties even though they are being
paid less than the current contract prescribes. Stiffing the professionals who have
direct contact with students might not be the most effective way to close the student
achievement gap.
As for promised substance from the board, that would be a good thing.
