Surge in Minneapolis slayings blamed on gangs
Howie Padilla and David Chanen, Star Tribune
August 11, 2004

Slayings on Minneapolis' North Side have doubled
since this time last year and authorities are
pointing fingers at gang feuds where specific
victims have been targeted.

Of the 14 homicides in the Fourth Precinct
so far this year, more than half appear to
have a gang connection as a motive, police
Capt. Rich Stanek said Tuesday.

"These are targeted specific murders," he said.
"They're not random drive-by acts."

The statistics stand in contrast to what is happening
throughout the city, including in other traditionally
crime-ridden areas.

As of Tuesday, there have been 24 homicides in
Minneapolis in 2004.

That's down from 29 homicides in the same
period last year.

In the South Side's Third Precinct, which has
struggled with gang and drug violence, there
have been eight homicides this year, compared
with 14 at the same time last year.

So the Fourth Precinct's problems have stood
out to police as well as to city and community leaders.
