Bernstein: Instead, there are a lot of folks who want to know that city
leadership is focused on making Minneapolis a safer, cleaner, responsive,
compassionate (but definitely not conservative) place to live and work.

Heller: We've been hearing this same story for decades - and it hasn't
worked yet. Minneapolis keeps shrinking while the State keeps growing.

Minneapolis population in 1950 was 521,718 (16% of the State)
Minneapolis population in 2000 was 382,618 (7.8% of the State)

Minnesota population in 1950 was 3,181,513
Minnesota population in 2000 was 4,919,479

What's wrong with this picture? City shrinks, spending and debts escalate
(at a staggering pace).

I hope a few competent candidates step forward with plans to reverse this
trend. How is Minneapolis going to attract more businesses, jobs, and
taxpayers to grow its way out of bankruptcy?

In the meantime Berstein writes: And, you can be damn sure that I will not
be signing any stupid "no tax" pledges! Nor will I be sweating bullets about
what people in living in North Oaks think about the Minneapolis spending and
budget priorities!

Heller gently reminds: When begging for money from the Legislature, success
is more likely with a little sweet talk. It's not nice to bite the hand
that feeds you.

Rather than more preaching about "safer, cleaner, compassionate", how about
using a pencil, a piece of paper, and some 3rd grade arithmetic. Let's hear
some HOWS and WHENS instead of just the same old WHATS.
