Connie, Todd, etal: Gary Schiff and I had a brief discussion about this Friday. Why this perfectly legitimate event was denied a permit is hard for me to understand. The problem will be addressed and I feel quite confident that the Mexican Independence Day Celebration will be held.

I am confident that a Mexican Independence Day celebration, no matter how joyously loud, would be tame in contrast to the daily auditory assault of our ongoing Lake Street re-construction. Furthermore, the noise of a party is, in my opinion, preferable to the sound of gunshots and drunken brawling that *usually* keep us up over in this neck of the woods... Along those lines, I would really love to see more evening activity (in the form of open shops and businesses) on Lake St in the evening. (And not just the 'hood shops whose sole purpose is to purvey rolling papers and cigarettes to those involved in the usual unsavory activities.) Why surrender the street to drug dealers as soon as the sun goes down?
