This is an extremely important occaission for our fellow citizens that hail
from Mexico. I know this to be true, as I have many Mexican friends.
Symbolically, as a community allow fireworks displays late into the evening
pretty-much for a 3-4 week period leading up to the 4th of July. We allow
the Basillica Block Party to play load music well into the night to raise
money for a religious cause. We allow numerous block parties loud/late
events during the aquatennial event.
While I understand the potential conflict with residents (in the area) that
do not wish to participate in this event, I believe the Hispanic contingent
in general and more specifically, the Mexican contingent of residents in
Minneapolis as deserving of the right to observe a holiday that holds such a
large significance in thier ethnic history.
In allowing residents to become good citizens of Minneapolis, I think it is
important that we be sensitive to the cultural differences that exist, and
celebrate them. It is specifcally this concept that makes Minneapolis a
truly great place to live.
