Attempts to put a football field on Boom Island would create many of the
same objective barriers that the current proposal faces. In layman's terms,
football fields don't necessitate a view while bike and pedestrian paths do
require a view. Furthermore, the city should not under any circumstances be
turning over land to a private entity for predominantly private use. If we
are going to build athletic facilities, regardless of who will utilize them,
we need to be looking at places where flat space exists without a view. For
example, Webster School has a field and the school is on the docket for
closure. I'm sure there are other fields that will also be going unused as
schools close.
