Are you running MRTG with logging enabled? Check the logs, any error messages being produced? MRTG is usually pretty good about producing an error message if it has a problem.
Which version of RRDTool are you running? Try updating to the latest if you have an early 1.3.x version, I think they had some errors. Problem Description: MRTG server stops updating the RRDBs while the MRTG process is still running. We tried het below: 1- Stopped and restarted the MRTG processes, RDDBs are update for a period and then stopped again. 2- Increased the child processes (Forks) from 4 to 6 processes, RDDBs are update for a period and then stopped again.
