But, you still had something physical in your hands. When you bought
software, you actually owned that software. You may have bought licenses,
but you also bought a license when you went to a computer store and picked
the box off the shelf. In the Cloud world, you buy a timeshare. It's not
yours. When your subscription is up, you either renew or stop using it,
i.e., Microsoft turns the lights off.

I'm kind of hoping that Microsoft will take their other apps (like Office
365) down the same road as Windows Azure VMs, i.e., when not using it, it
shuts down and stops charging you. So, you can choose to buy a year
subscription, or just pay by the instance.

If Microsoft stops (since how I worded it the first time was taken out of
context I'm being careful here) providing software that can be used in a
private cloud, how will customers who simply cannot or will not run
everything in a public cloud function?

Microsoft never actually "Sold software" did they? Wasn't that really the
genius behind MS? The fact that they were actually selling you the license
not the software.

Just a note here. We've been told (the MVPs) that "Microsoft" is monitoring
feedback on this. I'm about to forward this thread (because I mentioned it
and it was requested) so please at least know that you are being heard -
that's all I can promise though.

Shutting down Technet is truely a disservice to IT pros and Trainers alike.
Without the cheap licensing how can you see how a product performs over time
and then be able to apply upgrade processes etc to it and the previous
version. Currently I find i'm needing to juggle 3 versions 2007, 2012 RTM,
and 2012 SP1 inorder to validate features and changes between versions, test
upgrades and Migration scenarios that come forward. R2 coming out in the
fall / winter, that will be 4th version.

2007 - Its in place, people are considering migrating from, sometimes need
to health check or special reports.

2012 RTM - some can't go to SP1 yet because they have systems which don't
support No execute. In addition some are deployed and need support in
migration to SP1

2012 SP1 - New version, testing updates etc and use it with the other 2 to
test migrations

In addition you have items you want to run through that generate a history
for software updates, installed software, software metering rules etc.

No way you want to end up having to rebuild this every 6 months and to get
the same software, drives you to a MSDN Premium License to get the same
software @ $6,119.00 now that's a heavy blow.

There's also the virtual labs. You no longer have to maintain special
hardware.

Spinning up an Azure VM does not meet the requirement of MSDN software. I
can't test on my hardware, in my data center, in my environment without
MSDN or paying for software. Microsoft is going to push this Azure crap too
hard and people are simply going to stop using MS software. People are
heavily invested in the Microsoft skillset but other than the bodies running
the systems there's no other real dependency upon Microsoft. We could just
as easily run on open source.

Not really, when you think about it. TechNet was used more for downloading
software than any of the other benefits. You can spin-up a Windows Azure VM
and test the same software now. No reason to have it on-premise for
testing. Plus, the other options they are offering as replacements are all
free.

They are keeping MSDN, though (for a while), so you can subscribe to that if
you want to download bits.
