I think I may be a bit late to this thread... But wouldn't uninstall the CM
client stop the countdown? Obviously not a step to take for a large number
of servers, but if you have one or two that have the problem it is a quick
fix.

Note: I haven't actually tried this, I'd prefer you do that... in
production. :-)
