Same. No late nights except for when our web server got nailed. Damn web
admins. Now I control patches network wide.

Amen brother, that's exactly how it should. Just say, refer to my contract,
it isn't in their is it, well let's negotiate. I got them to pay 100% of my
cell phone bill on a monthly basis now, since all my monitoring systems,
send me regular updates when their is a problem, by text message to me
cell. But like MArtin my network is damn stabel a redundant so I have not had
to do many, if any, late nighters.

I think on call is ok when a) it's shared and b) it's paid. Unfortunately
that's not how it works here. Our help desk dispatcher wears a pager
24/7/365 with no pay. I think it's horrible that she must always be aware of
that pager and limit herself somewhat so that she's able to respond
professionally and immediately. She's young, likes to have fun, but can't
really because of that pager.

I personally do not carry my cell with me 100% of the time. More like 60%.
The company refuses to compensate, it was not in my agreement, so I do not
feel obligated to tie myself down 24/7. This generally leaves anywhere from
a couple hours up to a 12 hour response time. For me to be officially on
call, I require a few things: 1) that it be shared with my backups 2) that I
be compensated for the time I am on call 3) My cell bill is paid for that
period or they provide me with a pager. Otherwise, if they get me, good, if
not, they wait.

David.

I have always thought being a Network Admin was a 24/7 job.
If a server goes down and you know about it, you need to fix it. You
cant wait until 8am when everyone needs it.
I have been very lucky (or is it good?). My networks have always been
pretty stable so I haven't had to do much midnight work. At my current
job I have only had to do one 3AM fix.

Just had a question for you guys out there, consultants and/or full
timers on how much it is worth to be on call. How much do you guys
charge for carrying around a cell phone out of work and/or a beeper or
something like that?

Thanks,

Avi
