I use the only way that has always worked for all computers with similar
display circuitry features:
Alter contents of display stop logic just before display ends. The VDP is
then unable to stop since it never reaches the ending scan line -> NB: it's
neither a hardware flaw nor an obscure side effect. It's legal and logic.
In the MSX this is as simple as switching to 192 display height between
lines 192 - 212 and restore the 212 height after that line.
NB: The display adjustment trick DOES NOT WORK since display start is only
checked ONCE per frame by the vertical blanking circuitry. You can only
alter horizontal adjustment on the fly (the register is checked every
raster line).
