They don't disable it at all (well, maybe some very old ones).

I do think the loading in for example RoA is annoying during battle, yes
(sorry Peter, and yes I know you probably couldn't have done it otherwise).
You see, I didn't immediately install my harddisk again after I got back
from the fair... I played it from disk for some time, but the loading before
every spell got very annoying.
That's why some spare RAM-space for gfx/animations can turn out to be very
useful.
