You really think that would be a little-used feature? I know that the
Vimperator community isn't that large, and of that community a very
small subset are using Muttator, but I think that once Muttator gets out
of pre-alpha, its audience could widen.
Sure the userbase might widen, but I still think something as compacting is
just a workaround for stupid mailbox formats like MBOX, and shouldn't be so
prominent in a mail client, as a perfect mail client would never need (manual)
compacting.
I think "compact" has become Thunderbird's implementation of "expunge."
Being able to mark messages as deleted is a *feature* of IMAP (because
IMAP also supports moving to a Trash folder, and it can do it on the
server for you). The "deleted" state is treated like an extended tag (in
fact, it's implemented like this way on Courier IMAP servers) that gives
you a way to "check off" done tasks before you're ready to get rid of
them entirely.
I would be really upset if my mail client automatically expunged. Not
only is marking for deletion and expunging an important part of my task
organization process, but marking messages in my spam folder for
deletion tells my server-side spam filter that I'm ready for it to add
training data, and it will expunge them when it's done.
It's my impression that /most/ IMAP users would prefer this very
traditional way of dealing with IMAP messages. Plus, it's more efficient
to have the server mark a message rather than having it move it (even
though TBird doesn't actually have to do the move with IMAP).
I do use IMAP for some time, but never even thought about compacting folders.
And if so, i would not do it regularly (=a few times per hour), and a
:compact command could be used as i said (and that could be easily mapped).
I compact folders very frequently, but it sounds like I'll have to do
the mutt $ mapping manually if I want to use Muttator.
