Just to echo many of the parent posts: nuvevport and transcoding are all acceptable fair uses under the betamax decision. Over 20 years ago, the Supreme Court held this to be acceptable.

No laws are being broken here, and I am not even sure how you would use these tools to break the law (sure you could borrow others cds and copy them, so that would make any computer with a dc-rom drive and HD illegal, and I suppose you could make your own dvds of recorded content and sell them in the black market, that would make an VCR also capable of this infringment) -- Email me if you want a gmail account, I have invites.
