Often, the EDID has to be disabled to convince the card to drive things other than what the TV may (bogusly) reply with. However, in your case...I've got a DVI output on my Ti4200 going to a DVI->HDMI connector and into the back of the TV. It responds with EDID information when X starts up and advertises the following - any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated.
<snip>
(II) NVIDIA(0): Supported additional Video Mode: (II) NVIDIA(0): clock: 74.2 MHz Image Size: 708 x 398 mm (II) NVIDIA(0): h_active: 1920 h_sync: 2008 h_sync_end 2052 h_blank_end 2200 h_border: 0 (II) NVIDIA(0): v_active: 540 v_sync: 542 v_sync_end 547 v_blanking: 562 v_border: 0
<snip>
...convert this into an X modeline, if that's what the TV reported it could do. In otherwords,
Modeline mysooperdoopermode 74.2 1920 2008 2052 2200 540 542 547 562
That's a "540p" mode. For 1080i, you should be able to make it by modifying it to a double-height version of the same thing:
Modeline my1080i 74.2 1920 2008 2052 2200 1080 1082 1087 1102 interlace
Same frequencies, just interlaced, so 2x as many vertical lines.
